The Indigenous Peoples’ Month is a good opportunity to support the protection of the rights of Indigenous Peoples by undertaking different activities. To some extent these activities include instilling awareness among people concerning the provisions of IPRA, organizing cultural shows showcasing the different Indigenous cultural communities, and holding fora that assist in bringing the Indigenous Peoples in contact with the Filipino population. Hence, this month aims at shattering the myths and negative connotations that surround Indigenous Peoples by standing up for their cultures and promoting their respect and appreciation by the Filipino people. Also, there is a concern to the government and different organizations in regards to the issues like, land grabbing, discrimination and the plight of indigenous people.
The defense and advancement of the knowledge of the indigenous people is crucial for strengthening the IP culture. To do so, it is necessary to provide assistance in writing down and passing on traditions, languages and myths. Besides, it means acknowledging the importance of indigenous knowledge in the production of food, medicine, and environmental management. Such appreciation and cultivation of the knowledge creates and enhances our national heritage, while at the same time providing feasible options necessary for the problems experienced by the nation. The month-long observance of the Indigenous Peoples Month is also an opportunity to remind everyone the significance of the respect, the protection and the promotion of the rights and cultures of the Indigenous Peoples in the Philippines.
